AN OBSCURE EMBROIDERED “G” LOGO

History: An undeniable powerhouse and juggernaut of the Negro Leagues, the Homestead Grays secured nine consecutive league titles and three Negro World Series championships from 1937 to 1948. Some of baseball’s most legendary Hall of Famers showcased their skills with the Grays, including first baseman Buck Leonard who played for the Grays during the 1931 season. Our twill ballcap pays tribute to the on-field caps worn during that era while providing the comfort, breathability, and versatility of cotton. Featuring classic Ebbets details such as our signature green underbrim and satin binding, this hat is an easy-wearing wardrobe staple. In partnership with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM), we are proud to offer this cotton twill ballcap. A portion of proceeds from this product will support the NLBM in Kansas City. For more information about the museum, visit www.nlbm.com

G is for Grays

The embroidered 'G' on this natural cotton twill cap isn’t just for style—it’s for legacy. The Homestead Grays were one of the most dominant teams in Negro Leagues history, and this cap pays tribute to their place at the pinnacle of Black baseball. The natural cotton base and sharp contrast stitching are a nod to the era when teams played with grit, pride, and without excuses.

Washington’s Winning Secret

Though they began in Homestead, Pennsylvania, the Grays found their second home in Washington, D.C., playing in the same stadiums as the segregated Senators—but drawing much bigger crowds. At their peak, they were baseball royalty in the nation’s capital, even if few papers dared to say it.

"A G for Grays, and for greatness."

"Griffith Stadium’s true champions never wore white.”

"Griffith Stadium’s true champions never wore white.”

"Griffith Stadium’s true champions never wore white.”

Dynasty in the Shadows

The Homestead Grays were more than a baseball team—they were a dynasty built from defiance. Formed in the early 1910s and officially established in the 1920s, the Grays dominated Black baseball through the 1930s and 1940s. They claimed nine consecutive Negro National League pennants from 1937 to 1945, a stretch of excellence that rivals any franchise in the history of the sport.

Led by the legendary Cumberland Posey, the Grays developed and maintained a winning culture. Posey wasn’t just an owner; he was a strategist, a recruiter, and a visionary who understood both baseball and business. Under his leadership, the Grays secured top talent and built one of the deepest rosters in Negro League history.

The Stars Who Wore the G

Josh Gibson—often referred to as the 'Black Babe Ruth'—hit towering home runs that are still talked about today. Buck Leonard brought class and consistency at first base, pairing with Gibson to form the most feared middle of the order in Negro League history. Other notables like Cool Papa Bell, Ray Brown, and Jud Wilson ensured the team never lacked for speed, power, or poise.

These players weren’t just good. They were generational talents. And they proved it time and again, even when denied a chance to showcase it in Major League ballparks.

Segregated But Superior

The Grays regularly outdrew their white counterparts when playing in D.C.’s Griffith Stadium. While the Washington Senators struggled to field winning teams, the Grays packed the house. They were beloved by a city that rarely gave Black excellence its proper due. And yet, they kept winning. Quietly. Consistently. Dominantly.

Why This Cap Matters

This isn’t just a cap. It’s a monument stitched in cotton. The embroidered 'G' stands for Grays, but also for greatness. For Gibson. For games played in defiance of racism and neglect. For a team that left no doubt—even if they were rarely on the front page.
