AN EXACT REPLICA OF THE ON-FIELD UNIFORM WORN BY THE 1944 GRAYS
History: An undeniable powerhouse club, the Homestead Grays won nine consecutive league titles and three Negro World Series championships from 1937 to ‘48. In 1931, the Grays’ prolific lineup featured five future Hall of Famers.
A reproduction of the on-field uniform the Grays wore during their 1944 pennant-winning season, this jersey is authentic down to the last detail, including period-correct materials, lettering, sleeve patches, and trim. The back is adorned with the number 18, which was worn by Negro leagues legend Cool Papa Bell, the “fastest man in baseball.”
In partnership with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM), we are proud to offer this authentic wool flannel jersey. A portion of proceeds from this product will support the NLBM in Kansas City. For more information about the museum, visit www.nlbm.com

◈
A Road Jersey for a Road Dynasty
In 1944, the Homestead Grays were the undisputed kings of Negro League baseball. But dominance didn’t mean visibility. This wool road jersey captures more than a team uniform — it honors a season where excellence traveled underappreciated roads. From Pittsburgh to Washington D.C., the Grays played like legends, yet remained ghosts to much of mainstream America.
The Grays’ Unlikely Home
The Homestead Grays split their home games between Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and Griffith Stadium in D.C. — a nomadic arrangement that didn’t prevent them from carving out one of the most dominant seasons in Negro League history. With players like Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and Buck Leonard in the lineup, the 1944 squad wasn’t just good. They were transcendent.
Wool Built for Warriors
The 1944 wool jersey wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t built for style points. It was built for sweat, travel, doubleheaders, and glory won on borrowed fields. This recreation respects the form — thick flannel wool, sewn lettering, and a cut meant for movement. It’s road-ready, just like the team it honors.
◈
"Champions of everywhere — just not invited to the parade."
The Grays at Their Peak
The 1944 Homestead Grays were a machine. They won the Negro National League title with ease, finishing the season with a .778 winning percentage. They then went on to defeat the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro World Series. It wasn’t just a win. It was a coronation.
A Team Full of Legends
Josh Gibson, often referred to as the ‘Black Babe Ruth,’ hit over .370 that season. Buck Leonard, his longtime partner in the lineup, was the calm to Gibson’s storm — a professional hitter who rarely struck out and always delivered in the clutch. Cool Papa Bell brought speed and savvy. Ray Brown dominated from the mound. It was a roster that, by today’s standards, would fill an All-Star ballot on its own.
Segregated Glory
Despite their on-field brilliance, the Grays were largely ignored by mainstream sports media. Their games weren’t broadcast nationally. Their stats weren’t logged in official MLB record books. Their dominance was invisible to those who refused to look — but unforgettable to those who watched.
The Washington Connection
The Grays’ semi-permanent home in Washington D.C. made them one of the few Negro League teams to attract a dedicated fan base outside of a traditional Black metropolis. They became the de facto home team for Black Washingtonians. D.C. fans knew the roster by heart. They filled the stands. They told their children they were witnessing greatness — and they were.
Why This Jersey Matters
This jersey is a monument. The same way the Grays had to travel to claim their space, this jersey carries the story of a team who never got to play in the Majors, but still played like they were built for it. The stitched lettering. The heavyweight wool. It’s a history book you can wear.
